Opinion: The UP Election Has Tilted Towards A Caste-Based Equation

The Assembly election dates have been announced in as many as five states and the politicians have been strategically joining political parties where they can find solace. Their penance for the worldly goal will get completed only when they get the party ticket to contest for the polls. For this purpose, they flock to the party that assures them a ticket.

Mayawati (L) and Akhilesh Yadav (R)

This is perhaps the reason why they seek favours from other parties. This applies to both experienced and young politicians from all the political parties. The exodus and entry of politicians have started leaving rave reviewers among the masses.

A thorough view of the available report of The Association for Democratic Reform between 2016-2020 shows that a total of 357 leaders had contested the elections during these five years by shifting to another political party. Out of them, as many as 170 contestants successfully emerged triumphant, thereby halting the victory rate at 48%.

Here, the question arises: how many turncoats secure the party ticket after joining the chosen party? This is also a relevant point. Opportunity remains the main consideration and if we look at the ADR report, we find that as many as 187 fur coats licked the taste of defeat. The strange point remains that those who joined the BJP by renouncing their parent party got success in the respective elections. The BJP gave tickets to 67 such turncoats, whereas only 54 earned the prestige of victory.

In the current assembly polls in UP, there are reports of politicians leaving the ruling party and joining the party known for wearing red caps. Analysts are reacting that the UP elections are tilting largely towards caste-based equations.
