In a marriage, when two people come together, they share the same roof and provide all forms of support to each other, but at the same time they should be able to enjoy their own space and freedom.
Freedom is something that shouldn’t be asked for. Everyone is born free. It’s a basic, human right.
So, if a man is seen as “giving” freedom to his wife, people shower him with praises. When, in reality, this is wrong. Men shouldn’t have to “give” freedom. Women HAVE freedom. And, men shouldn’t find it difficult to accept this.
A man’s wife has the freedom to do whatever she wants just like he has the freedom to do whatever he wants. This is normal. This is a standard marriage. Men are adult enough to grasp this fundamental knowledge.
But, putting them up on pedestals for knowing the basics is the same thing as infantilising them.
On the one hand, you find people going around droning on about how men are better suited for business, compared to women because apparently, women aren’t equipped for it. “They lack the skills and the stamina.”
On the other hand, you find men on social media sharing videos of them doing a half-decent job of tying their child’s hair. In the comments’ section, more than half of the people are applauding such men for their “valiant” efforts.
A woman not only fulfils such tasks centred around parenting, but is also able to handle other household tasks impressively, at the same time. Yet. she is not praised for it.
Men are handed out medals for doing mediocre jobs, while women who undertake hundreds of tasks on a daily basis are barely complimented. Why?
If a husband is seen dusting the windows or cleaning the house, or doing any other task attributed to women in a sexist society, his wife is called lucky for having such a “helpful” husband.
In actuality, the house belongs to the both of them and hence, it is the responsibility of both the parties to look after it and split the household chores.
The burden shouldn’t be entirely put on the shoulders of one person, who, in most situations, happens to be the wife.
If a man, getting too much credit for doing his part of the job isn’t ridiculous, then I don’t know what is!
Women aren’t beholden to men in any way.
Sure, they are being decent guys by carrying out their duties, but lauding them for doing the bare minimum, patting them on the back for doing nothing out of ordinary, is what keeps their ego afloat.
