Trigger warning: mentions of death and abortion
Watching the film Mimi, made the author ponder over his own life experiences. His parents took care of his (now deceased) brother, who was disabled.
November 2021 took my brother’s life. It introduced me to the first tragedy of my life. The pain it led to was really unbearable. I met the most weakest version of myself.
But, we have to move on from everything that is too heavy for us. So, I have been trying to do things that make me happy. Keeping myself busy with studies, watching movies or series, are some of the activities I get up to.
Dipti Das, my college mate-cum-sister suggested I watch the Bollywood movie named “Mimi”. I am not prone to watching movies, but I do watch some specific ones loved by all and suggested by my close ones.
So, as a whim, I decided to watch Mimi, starring Kriti Sanon as a dancer and aspiring actress. She dreams of going to Mumbai and becoming a Bollywood star.
Bhanu Pratap Pandey, played by Pankaj Tripathi, is a cab driver who is showing a white couple around Udaipur. The lady can’t give birth to a child, so they are searching for a healthy woman to become their surrogate, in exchange for money.
Bhanu agrees to help them find such a woman, and she is none other than Mimi.
Now, the question may arise: what is surrogacy? Surrogacy involves a woman agreeing to carry a baby for someone else. After the baby is born, the birth mother gives custody and guardianship to the intended parent(s).
Mimi agrees. She lies to her parents about going away to act in a big film, involving nine months of shooting. Days pass. Mimi is excited about her Bollywood dream being fulfilled.
But, when some months later, a doctor says that the baby may be disabled, the white lady cries. Her husband tells Bhanu to help Mimi get an abortion.
If a child has a disability, where is the problem? All children are symbols of our future. I was reminded of my mother when watching Mimi. My brother had special needs. She and my dad left no stone unturned to care for him.
If a surrogate gives birth to a child with a disability, the donor parents must accept the child wholeheartedly. Leaving her behind in such a tough situation is really harsh.

According to me, child birth is the most beautiful thing a woman can undergo. She becomes a mother! A mother that gives bona fide love to her child.
My humble request to the people reading this is to unite against cruel behavior. A child should always be treated as a child, not an object. Lastly, there are many children living in orphanages. Adopting them will help shape their bright futures.
