Trigger warning: Mention of violence, mental disorder
The news came from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, where a Muslim man living with bipolar disorder was assaulted; he was forced to lick his own spit and chant “Jai Shri Ram”. The incident happened at a protest by the BJP against the security breach during the Prime Minister’s visit to Punjab.
The identified man is Zeeshan Khan, a 32-year-old man living with bipolar disorder. He was allegedly assaulted on the protest site for using abusive words for one of the BJP leaders. He was immediately surrounded by a group of BJP supporters. He was made to spit on the road and lick it, and chant “Jai Shri Ram”.
An FIR has been filed by Zeeshan’s younger brother Rehan khan. The police said that one person has been arrested in the case and more arrests will be made after further investigation.
My Opinion
Using abusive words for anyone is not right but treating a person like this is egregious. The law doesn’t give anyone the right to assault a person just because they abused someone. What happened in Dhanbad with Zeeshan is barbaric and inhumane. A proper investigation must take place and all the people responsible for the crime must be brought to justice.
