Poem: Women In The Kitchen

child bride in movie parched

Married off at twenty,
she modestly stood beside her bed,
Waiting for the new beginning.
Her dreams were cozy,
Like the tenderness of a marigold.
Wishing to conquer,
The numerous nights and days.

The other day,
Known faces took her to every room,
To make her familiar with the new rules.
Boundaries of shame and dignity
were narrated and,
Honours of men were passed
onto the thickness of her veil.

The cusp of the relationship began,
From daughter to daughter-in-law.
The familiar windows became blurry,
which opened for her new doors.
One took her closer to dreams of hers,
the latter opened her up to the ideals of others.

The doors were not for a world outside,
that lived, laughed, and thronged.
It was for the cups and saucers,
vegetables and groceries.
As from now on,
The kitchen was going to be her given world.
