Opinion: “Hate Speech Is A Threat To Democratic Values And Harmony”

Anurag Thakur and a horde of his supporters

Tera muskurana gazab ho gaya

Wo nazuk labon se mohabbat ki baatein

Hami ko sunana gazab ho gaya”

Asaduddin Owaisi said these lines about the infamous “goli maro!” (shoot the traitors, with traitors being a dog whistle for Muslims) slogan chanted by union minister Anurag Thakur, during the anti-CAA and NRC protests in Delhi.

It is recent trend emerging in India where we encounter a new controversy with the rising. Everyday brings a new hullabaloo, rather than optimism and bliss.

A bench of the Delhi High Court said that, “If you’re saying something with a smile, then there is no criminality, if you’re saying something offensive, then definitely.”  The bench was hearing a plea to initiate unlawful chronicles against union minister Anurag Thakur for “hate speech”.

I am astonished after watching and reading these stunning lines. What a pleasing thought and statement it is!

Hatred: Is This What Young India Wants?

As we all are surrounded by hatred and unfairness, it is a unique kind of atmosphere which we are breathing in. People are might attribute this to pollution, but nobody is talking about the actual cause—the unsavoury environment of our beloved country.

The formula of enmity is peddled to you as you simply scroll down on your social media pages, be it Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. You can find the answer of Chetan Bhagat’s book title “What Young India Wants”.

Young India is great! Is it? To me, it seems like young India wants to spread antipathy, enmity, communalism, passing judgments dictating each other.

We have been facing countless issues:

A few people are discussing issues packed with sense and logic. If we are not mindful about and precise in achieving our objectives, how can we uplift the country? The time we are is a very crucial one, where we are required to speak with lucidity and intellect.

Hate Speech: Remedial Measures Must Be Taken

A group of ill-informed people are playing the roles of leadership and their followers have no sense of their own. They are like animals and following an evil beast unquestioningly.

Hate speech creates krodh (anger).

The verse in the picture above is from the “Gita”. It roughly translates to: ‘Anger leads to delusion, delusion causes the brain to go haywire; when the mind is unstill, then all reason goes for a toss; when rationality is cast aside, the human dies.’

Hate speech is a threat to democratic values and steady harmony in society. It creates barriers in the growth of harmony and peace among the common people.

Remedial measures must be taken when hate speech is uttered by someone. Tackling hate speech also requires a proper plan which can be executed throughout our country. At the very least, this calls for coordinated data collection and research, studying the root causes of and conditions conducive to, hate speech.
