Protests in Chandigarh Uni: Students Allege Videos of 60 Girls Leaked Online

Update: Three students have been arrested in the case so far. Meanwhile, the warden has been suspended and college has been shut until 24th of September. There were also reports coming in that eight girls have attempted to die by suicide and that one student died by suicide, but both the university and the police have refuted these rumours. The police, last evening, even denied that 60 videos were leaked, stating that only one girl shared a personal video of herself with a friend.

Editorial note: While the details of this particular case are still being verified, it’s deeply upsetting that even in 2022, women on Indian campuses feel threatened for their safety and struggle to secure basic rights like equal hostel in-timings. Why are women often gaslighted in the name of ‘women’s izzat’ and forced to compromise? To share your thoughts, start writing, click here.

Chandigarh University is a private University located in Mohali. A huge protest broke out on the Chandigarh University on campus yesterday after videos of over 60 girls in the hostel bathroom were leaked on the internet in Mohali, Punjab. One student has been arrested by the police in the matter, registering a case under the Section 354C of the Indian Penal code and IT Act.

Visuals of the students allegedly not being allowed to protest also emerged, showing the campus gates being locked. There are also reports coming in that 8 girls have attempted to die by suicide following their videos being leaked. They are currently in hospital. There were also news doing rounds that one student died by suicide but that’s not the case. The police has refuted these rumours. Mohali SSP Vivek Soni told news agency ANI that no deaths or suicide attempts had occurred. “One student who was taken in an ambulance was suffering from anxiety,” he said.

Some girl recorded the video of around 60 girls bathing in LC 3 girls hostel and sold it to boys for money. When they came to know that their mms is leaked few of them got panick attack and some tried to die by suicide. Everyone in the University is protesting against the culprits,” Sara Mansuri, a student from the University told Youth Ki Awaaz.

The Chandigarh University, Pro-Chancellor Dr. RS Bawa also released a statement on the said incident. It said, “The rumor which is circulating through media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students … is totally false and baseless. During the preliminary investigation conducted by the University, there have been no videos found of any student which are objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl which was shared by herself to her boyfriend.”

Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati has said that an investigation into the matter is underway. “This is a serious matter, an investigation is underway. I am here to assure parents of all students that the accused won’t be spared,” she said.

Allegedely, the girl who has been arrested allegedly leaked the videos to a person from Shimla who then went on to upload them on social media platforms. The girl has allegedly been caught on camera confessing that she did make the videos and sent them to a man in Shimla.

A massive protest has erupted as a result of this with slogans of ‘We Want Justice’ echoing the air. But allegedly, the police is stopping the protests by locking gates.

The investigation is underway and details are still emerging.
