My Father’s Cancer Made Me ‘Shravan Kumar’ In Modern Times

Children’s attachment to parents is innate and natural because children do not imagine anything in their life without their parents. Because his first role model/icon/ideal is his parents.

Who was “Shravan Kumar”

Shravan Kumar is a mythological character. It is believed that Shravan Kumar’s parents were blind. Shravan Kumar used to serve him with utmost devotion. Once his parents wished to undertake a pilgrimage. Shravan Kumar made a kanwar and started travelling with both of them sitting on his shoulders. One day, he reached the forest near Ayodhya. There the parents felt thirsty during the night. Shravan Kumar went to the Saryu coast with his tumba for water. At the same time, Maharaj Dasaratha was also there for hunting. When Shravan Kumar dipped his tumba in the water, Dasharatha understood that a deer was drinking water. He dropped the rhetorical arrow. Shravan Kumar felt the arrow.

Seeing Dasharatha sad, Shravan Kumar said- I am not sad about my death, but I am very sad for my parents. You go and tell them the news of my death and quench their thirst by drinking water. Dasharatha saw that Shravan, taking a divine form, was going to heaven sitting in a plane. After performing the fire rites of the son, the parents also took fire samadhi in the same pyre and attained the best world. It is said that King Dasharatha snatched his son from the old parents. That is why King Dasharatha also had to suffer the separation of his son, Ramchandra ji went to exile for fourteen years. King Dasharatha could not bear this separation. That is why he gave up his life.

Why is my position like Shravan Kumar’s?

About a year ago, my father told me that he had a slight stomach ache. So I asked him to go to a doctor near you. The doctor said that he might have a problem related to gas. Dad started following the doctor’s words. But the situation did not return to normal. At that time, I was absorbed in teaching work in Patna. I told him that you should consult the nearest primary health centre. Father did not get relief from there either. By then, I had moved from Patna to Purnia and got absorbed in teaching. But my father’s health condition was not getting normal. Then send them to Darbhanga, Dr Goyal, Gastro’s doctor, after arranging money. Then the doctor said that you should get a CT scan done in Patna IGIMS immediately because there is a lump in your gall bladder and there is swelling in it.

After taking leave from his teaching work, he continued seeing the doctor from IGIMS Patna for one month (January 2022). There he first showed the gastro medicine doctor; he did a CT scan, in which he clarified that he has gall bladder cancer. I had lost sleep when the biopsy report came; that night, I was in Purnia. I kept crying in my bedroom all night. And again and again, I was afraid of being an orphan. After taking leave from teaching work, I immediately met the doctor of gastro medicine, and he told that you should go to the oncology department, i.e. in the cancer hospital, which was opened by the Bihar state government recently.

When the oncology doctor saw him, he told that since you have gall bladder cancer and that too in a certain area, then you should see a gastro surgery doctor. When the Gastro surgery doctor studied the report, he said that the disease had spread to a large area, so the chances of the operation were 50:50%. This made me even more scared that I would not have known. Well, the doctor asked everything about the father, what he used to do and how the food was. After that, he handed over a list of some essential things in which two units of blood cost 60000 ₹. And with the ok report of anaesthesia. When my father saw such a situation, he remembered a close friend (Dr Umesh Prasad Singh) who told him that he should immediately go to Delhi ILBS Hospital Basantkunj New Delhi. You will get complete treatment. Then I went to Delhi with a Tatkal ticket from Patna itself and went to a cousin (Shahnawaz Alam) there. He helped a lot.

Then the round of treatment started at ILBS Hospital. which was extremely expensive. First, all the investigation was done. After that, the doctor there told us that his operation was not possible immediately, so first, we will do chemotherapy. After that, they will be operated on. After six chemotherapy, when PET CT was done, it was found that there was a lump in his liver and another in the stomach. In such a situation, the father’s weight kept falling. After six months, the doctor said that he would do four more chemotherapy in the second round. 2 Chemotherapy was done in Delhi after that father’s mind got bored with Delhi. So I brought him to Bihar from Tatkal ticket 3rd AC. Then the search for the hospital for the remaining chemotherapy started, then it came to known that the robbery was going on in the private hospital. 25000 ₹ are being sought for one chemotherapy. Then on an internet search, I learned about Dr Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center in Muzaffarpur, an integral unit of Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital Mumbai. Then two chemotherapy was completed. Even today, the same treatment is going on.

The attitude of my relatives during my father’s cancer treatment

When the cancer was confirmed, the relatives of the relatives blossomed. He came and consoled me and started preparing the land to be sold after giving me some financial assistance. During this, my mental/financial/physical condition has become very bad. One of my seniors told me to talk about the organization “Milap” crowdfunding for financial assistance. After that, seeing that situation, my relatives got furious and said that now our situation had become such that we would take the help of crowdfunding. It is a matter of honour being auctioned for our family. And today, it has been a whole year since my financial condition is getting worse daily, but no relative is even asking.

My condition is like this because of my love for my parents

No one can take the place of parents in the life of any human being. Because with them, the whole sensibility of the children remains attached. Their parents are involved in all of the child’s dreams. I am also one of them who wants to see his parents with him continuously. That’s why I had taken a vow that even if I had to sell myself, I would get my father treated.

As a result, my father is still alive and with us. We also know that the body is mortal, but it should be treated as far as possible. People die of cancer without delay, but if there is treatment, some more life can be found.

Modern Age and Shravan Kumar

In the modern era, where thousands of old age homes are being built every day around the world, and millions of people leave their parents in old age homes, becoming Shravan Kumar is a very challenging task.
