Who Is A Pluviophile? What’s The Meaning Of Pluviophile?
Some love winter (I do), some love summer, but some look forward to rain all year long.
A pluviophile is someone who finds comfort, joy and peace of mind during rainy days. Are you someone who gets excited when it starts raining, rushes out to get drenched, finds it romantic and experiences physical, emotional and mental comfort when it rains? You are a pluviophile then!
In Greek, the word “philos” means “love.” The suffix “ia” means “quality. Hence, “philia” (“filia” in English) means the quality of feeling love for a given situation or object. In turn, “pluvium” comes from “pluvial” which means “from rain or related to it”. Pluviophilia is the love, fondness or special attraction for the rain and everything concerning rain. But don’t go on the word philia too seriously. It does not signify any clinical discomfort that needs medical attention.
To be a pluviophile, you need to check some boxes. You must enjoy everything about rain – its sight, touch, smell and sound.

1. Hearing the sound of rain makes you feel at home
Listening to raindrops brings you enormous comfort. It feels like coming back home. The sound of rain is the most melodious sound for you, and you could listen to it whole day.
2. You can’t stay inside when it rains
It’s very difficult for a pluviophile to stay inside when it rains. You love getting drenched and soaked in rain. Raindrops feel like a companion to you. It feels at peace, at home in the rain; it feels like you belong.
3. Mitti ki khushboo (scent of the soil) is everything for you
You don’t just love the rain when it’s pouring. The before and after – the signal of rain and the scent and experience it leaves behind- are equally dear to you. You love going for a walk or soaking in the mitti ki khushboo (scent of the soil) after it rains. It is comforting for you and makes you feel serenity like never before. It helps you concentrate on the present moment and cherish it.
4. The rain calms you down a lot
Well, yeah. Some feelings are indescribable and the comfort a pluviophile feels seeing the rain and soaking in the rain is one such feeling. It’s comforting, it’s affectionate, it’s loving, endearing and absolutely rejuvenating for you. You understand and feel happiness in every inch of your being – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
5. You love the gloom and skies
Well, I relate very hard to this. I love the gloom of the skies during rain. It’s oddly comforting. Nothing beats listening to music and watching the dark skies. You find an odd balance in the grey of the skies – a balance in life and everything living. You sit at the window and gaze at the dark skies. The sign of dark skies tells you about the impending rain and makes you feel joy like no other.
6. You love to watch the rain from your window
Even if you’re not going outside when it is pouring, you will check this box if you’re a pluviophile. You absolutely watching the rain pour from the comfort of your window. You love gazing at how raindrops touch the ground and feel at peace seeing that. You relish the sound of the rain. It is music to your ears. Watching rain pour is your favourite sight in the world.
