Maryam Nawaz Becomes Pakistan’s First Female Chief Minister

In a historic turn of events, Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been sworn in as the first woman Chief Minister of Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province. The year 2024 will forever be etched in the annals of Pakistani politics as the moment when gender barriers were shattered and a new era dawned.

The 2024 Punjab Provincial Election

On February 8, 2024, millions of Pakistanis headed to the polls to elect their representatives. The provincial elections in Punjab were closely watched, and the stakes were high. The incumbent Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, led the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) (PML-Q) government, but winds of change were blowing.

The Digital Census and Delayed Elections

Before the elections, the results of the 2023 digital census were approved. Armed with fresh data, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided to redraw constituency boundaries. This delayed the elections by several months, as new delimitations were published in December 2023.

Maryam Nawaz’s Ascent

Maryam Nawaz, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) [PML-N], emerged as a formidable contender. Her political lineage, charisma, and determination resonated with voters. Lahore-XV became her battleground, and she secured victory, paving the way for her historic appointment.

The Election Day Drama

On the fateful day of the Chief Minister’s election, the Punjab Assembly witnessed high drama. The joint candidate of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Hamza Shahbaz, represented the PML-N. His opponent was Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, backed by the PML-Q and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

But the unexpected happened. Twenty-five PTI MPAs crossed party lines to support Hamza Shahbaz. The Assembly chamber erupted into chaos, with PTI and PML-N supporters clashing. Ewers flew, and tempers flared. The police entered the Assembly for the first time in its history, arresting three MPs.

Maryam Nawaz Takes the Helm

Amidst the tumult, the dust settled, and the votes were counted. Maryam Nawaz emerged victorious, securing 138 seats for the PML-N. Her vision for Punjab includes education reforms, healthcare improvements, and economic growth. As the first female Chief Minister, she carries the hopes and aspirations of millions.

A Coalition Government

In a broader context, the 2024 elections also shaped the national landscape. A coalition comprising the PML-N and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) agreed to form the next government of Pakistan. Despite winning the most votes, former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party found itself shut out of power.

What Lies Ahead

As Maryam Nawaz settles into her role, challenges await. Balancing regional development, managing diverse interests, and addressing pressing issues will test her leadership. But her journey signifies progress—a step toward a more inclusive and equitable Pakistan.

In February 2024, the Punjab Assembly chambers echoed with applause as Maryam Nawaz took her oath. The glass ceiling cracked, and a new chapter began. Punjab, with its rich history and vibrant culture, now looks to its first woman Chief Minister with anticipation and hope.
