From Nehru To Today: Tracing India’s UNSC Journey

From a long course of time, India tries to win the permanent member seat in UNSC (United Nations Security council) but the denial from China obstructs the entry of India in the G5.

And whenever the hot debate on India’s UNSC seat starts then the right wing parties start to propagate their idea on the topic which says that due to the fault of Nehru, India is not a permanent member of NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group).

According to right wing  Political historians, in 1950, USA give the offer of permanent seat of UNSC to India but the then Prime Minister of India Pt. J.L Nehru rejected it. And give their support to China to become the Permanent member of UNSC. Is the tale propagated by  right wing Politicians  is the fact or the political stance to take political gains by manipulating the voters on the ground on International matters?  So, let’s excavate rhe mine of history.

The story begins with the establishment of the United Nations in 1945, this is the time when the Second World War had just ended and brought immense suffering to the entire human community and after this the world community takes the initiative to establish an institution which helps avoid international conflict and prevent future world wars and this gives rise to the United Nations.

And at that time many sub miscellaneous cells made under the United Nations, in which UNSC is one of them which is the most powerful organ of UNO it has the responsibility to tackle all types of threat to world by taking the economic and sometimes strategic action to those who work as a war criminal.

At that time, permanent seats in the UNSC were given to those states which were major member states of the Allies power in World War ll. On that basis, Soviet Union, United States of America, Britain, France got permanent seats in the United Nations and one other one was given permanent seat which is China.

But in 1949, when the Communist forces took over the entire Republic of China (Chinese mainland) because of the Mao’s Communist revolution and transformed it into the People’s Republic of China, Chiang kai shekh, the then President of China, along with his followers, captured that small island, visited and founded the Republic of China which is called Taiwan.

Taiwan held a permanent seat on the UNSC from 1949 to 1971 because the UNO and the world community recognize Taiwan as the representative of the Chinese Mainland. But after the course of time, the resolution passed in the United Nations in 1971 led to recognition by the world, and especially the United States, of the People’s Republic of China as the legitimate representative of Mainland China.

In 1971 People’s Republic of China officially becomes the permanent member of UNSC.

So, at the time we know that China is the permanent member of UNSC from the time when India was under british control , the actions took place in 1972 was just the transfer of power .

But the main question is on hold at the time that USA offered seat to India or not?

So, the answer is yes, but the proposal was not formal, it was part of America’s foreign policy to counter the Soviet Union and hinder the spread of communist philosophy and it is also true that Nehru denies it and Nehru’s denial The stated reason for the UNSC seat is to prevent tensions with China and the undemocratic use of the veto power, which does not follow the principles of equality and democratization of power..

Some people’s also say that in 1955 soviet Union give the offer of permanent UNSC seat to India  .

In 1956, Nehru said that no formal offer had been made to India by the Soviet Union and that we could not take a permanent seat in the United Nations unless the Charter of the United Nations was amended.

And finally, China is currently the only country that prevents India from becoming a permanent member of the UNSC and as before, India’s policy is also to amend the UN Charter and remove the veto and democratize the UNSC.
