The Harsh Reality Of Women Manual Scavengers In India

Out of 1.3 million manual scavengers in India, 95% are women who are forced to clean dry latrines and pick up human shit with their bare hands. Despite the passing of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation (PEMSR) Act in 2013, which outlawed the practice of manual scavenging completely, this remains a prevalent practice.
