Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an All-India test authorised and managed in eight regions across the country. The exam is conducted by the GATE Committee, comprising faculty members from IISc and seven other IITs. The purpose of the exam is to test the knowledge of candidates in the field of science and engineering.

A good GATE score is helpful for getting admission in to IITs, IISC, IIITs, NITs and many other renowned institutions. GATE qualification is also a minimum requirement to apply for various fellowships awarded by many Government organizations like DRDO, BARC, ISRO etc.

Students can also pursue masters from some foreign universities such as the National University of Singapore, The Nanyang Technological University, Technical University of Munich and RWTH Aachen as the GATE score is accepted as a valid substitute for the GRE as an entry-level criterion.
