From the moment we’re born, we’re thrust with a blue suitcase or a pink one which defines the rest of our lives for us. In the crucial conversations around gender equality and gender justice, the focus on the oppressive tool – ‘masculinity’ – that’s being used, generation after generation to maintain this gender hierarchy in the home, at the workplace, in public spaces and interpersonal relationships, is not often talked about. Masculinity, in the way it pressurises men to be more ‘like a man’, ‘manly’, ‘man enough’ is equally oppressive and exploitative of men.
What's a Man?, in collaboration with Dr. Deepa Narayan, is a series of podcasts that hope to unravel these notions of masculinity and start a crucial conversation around what it means to be a man in India today through 10 exclusive episodes, and stories from over 200 men across the socio-cultural and gender spectrum.
