Most of us know ‘Depression’ as a mere word which doesn’t affect our lives. Some boil it down to a ‘dimaag ki kharabi’ or ‘pagalpan’. So, this article is for those who think that depression is just some sort of madness.
Let me tell you that depression can be as painful as a terminal disease. Just because it manifests in your brain, that doesn’t mean it is not real. Here are some of the symptoms of depression:
Behaviour
- not going out anymore
- not getting things done at work or school
- withdrawing from close family and friends
- relying on alcohol and sedatives
- not participating in usual enjoyable activities
- unable to concentrate
Emotions
- overwhelmed
- guilty
- irritable
- frustrated
- lacking in confidence
- unhappy
- indecisive
- disappointed
- miserable
- sad
Thoughts
- ‘I’m a failure.’
- ‘It’s my fault.’
- ‘Nothing good ever happens to me.’
- ‘I’m worthless.’
- ‘Life’s not worth living.’
- ‘People would be better off without me.’
Physical symptoms
- tired all the time
- sick and run down
- headaches and muscle pains
- churning gut
- sleep problems
- loss or change of appetite
- significant weight loss or gain
If any one recognises these symptoms in oneself or others, do not take it lightly. Depression is as harmful as any physical ailment and needs to be discussed openly. The checklist won’t provide a diagnosis – for that you’ll need to see a medical professional – but it can help to guide you and provide a better understanding of how you’re feeling. Try to not push it under the carpet and take care of your mental health.
