Is Porn Ban In India A Sensible Move?

The government of India has tried to show an even more ‘sanskari’ version of itself yet again by banning adult content on the internet, citing the need to protect public morality.

Reliance Jio, one of the largest internet service providers, reportedly blocked access to several adult or pornographic websites, and it’s highly speculated that Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and BSNL may follow the lead. But it’s strange that Reliance Jio was the first among all to comply with government directives even when state-run BSNL is yet to comply.

As per the report Uttarakhand High Court has directed Department of Telecommunication (DOT) to issue directives to all internet service providers for banning over 827 porn sites. As soon as it was issued Jio banned all proposed adult websites on its network.

Is Accessing Porn Legal In India?

Nobody can put you in jail for watching porn unless you are doing it in a public place. It is legal to watch porn in India unless it’s child pornography, child abuse or extreme acts of violence which are explicitly illegal in the country.

Indians Won’t Stop

India is the third largest porn watching nation (after UK and USA).

But actually, Indians don’t care about banning because they are well known for their ‘jugad’.

And the largest watched porn site Pornhub has changed its domain name for India. Besides, millions of other websites except these 827 are still working.

A local ISP – level block which is commonly seen in India, can be surpassed easily by using Virtual Private Network (VPN).

At last, India should look out for more plausible options rather than banning porn – like sex education and curbing dissemination of child pornography.
