I’ll Celebrate Independence Day When All The Women In India Are Free

August 15 is the day when India celebrates its Independence. Why? As we all know on August 15, 1947, India became free from British rule.

The U.K. parliament passed the Indian Independence Act 1947, transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian constituent assembly. That’s why India celebrates Independence Day on August 15.

How Do We Celebrate The Day?

We celebrate the day in many ways, including:

A Question For The Youth

Do you really feel independent? Like do you find yourself free?

If yes, then you may be happy in’dependent’, means you are happy to be dependent because we are not really independent.

Being a girl, I never find myself independent; if my parents give me freedom, I am restricted by society. If I am free from society, I’m restricted by my parents. If I am free from both, I am restricted by people outside. Wherever I go, I feel dependent; others decide what I should do and what I should not.

I have to ask my parents what I should study, whom I should marry, what I should wear. If not my parents, then I have to abide by society’s parameters.

Where is my freedom? Where will I celebrate Independence Day? Or when will I be free to celebrate freedom?

If I do whatever I want, society will judge me.

If I wear what I want, I might get raped/molested because of my clothing.

If I marry a guy I want to, I will be boycotted by the society.

Where is the freedom to celebrate?

Even on 15th August when India celebrates Independence Day, I can’t go out at 11 p.m. to feel that independence. Because there I will be restricted by men who are celebrating their freedom to roam outside alone at night.

Do you still think we are independent? Not only girls, but even some boys also are not free to be what they want to be.

When will I celebrate Independence Day?

When will I feel safe at night while walking alone on the road?

When will my clothes not be a reason to get raped?

When no girl gets raped in our society only then, I will be free. When my opinions are considered as important as a man’s in society; when I don’t have to carry a pepper spray for my safety in my country which celebrates its independence, that day, I will celebrate Independence Day. I will be celebrating Independence Day, not in “dependence” day!
