His journey started from Rajasthan where he was born. Then, in 1984, he joined the National School of Drama in Delhi. Later he moved to Mumbai where he started his acting career with memorable roles in numerous serials, including, Chandrakanta, Bharat Ek Khoj, Banegi Apni Baat, Star bestsellers and Sparsh.

He got massive recognition after the critically-acclaimed film, Maqbool, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Though he did incredible work in Ek doctor ki Maut and Such a Long Journey earlier which went unnoticed. Hansil became a milestone in which his role as a fearless, ambitious goon earned him a lot of praise from critics and audience.

He recieved National Award for his work in the movie Paan Singh Tomar, which was based on the real story of an athlete-turned-dacoit. Some of his other films such as Metro, The Lunchbox and Piku did commercially well at the box office and their success reiterated the fact that good story and genuine acting always play a more significant role in the success of any movie than merely the casting of popular stars.

His last appearance was in Angrezi Medium, in which his role as a common man and an innocent father going against all odds for his daughter was hugely appreciated by his fans.

Irrfan has inspired a generation of actors by proving that it’s not stardom or larger than life persona which establishes an actor, but it’s sheer hard work and good acting skills which make any actor immortal in the history of cinema.
