“Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill”—Verdict: A Letter to Laughter

This is the second stand-up special for Gill after Kanan Gill: Keep it Real (Amazon Prime). Here, Kanan Gill whirls on stage with no care in the world. He is chirpy, confident and ready to land the lines.

Yours sincerely, Kanan Gill is all about what Kanan wanted, but didn’t get. He wanted health, but gets a hilarious trip to the doctor. He wanted success, but then he soon felt like he was going to be a failure.

In his special, he talks about formal and informal letters. In this bit, he says “Formal and informal letters that we believed would change our lives, only to find out that nobody cares whether the date is on the left or right, and why is the address written inside the letter when we are going to post it?

He also lists the plans he had written for himself earlier in life, including ‘trying to find love’ in a letter to his future self as he literally takes out an old piece of torn paper on which he had written them. The whole point of his joke is that we all make plans, but ‘life is life’ and there’s no point in dwelling in the past.

Throughout the show, he uses metaphors to speak about the challenges of life.

The funniest part of the show was his bit about Julius Caesar, a play whose last lines some of us must remember very well even now. He talks about how our education system stresses upon memorizing books rather than learning it.

Julius Caesar had the most literal metaphor—Brutus ‘backstabs’ his best friend by actually stabbing him in the back! He also stresses on the importance of ‘last words’ in one’s life, which can either be a tragedy or become meat for playwrights. Don’t let your final words be “Arre yaar“, he jokes—they should rather be in Latin or Sanskrit: something like “Aham Gachhami” (I am going).

This show is about rediscovering the goals he had set for himself when he was younger and seeing how his life has measured up.

In short, during these lockdown days, if you are looking forward to watching some good comedy content, then Kanan Gill’s Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill is the one you can watch!
