Looking For A Hindu Girl/Muslim Girl: The Hypocrisy Of ‘Educated Liberals’ On Dating Apps

The socio-political turmoil in the country today hasn’t spared romantic relationships. Think twice before getting attracted to someone. They might belong to a different religious community or a different caste. I remember when in college, I often saw students talking about interfaith marriages in a liberal way. But when it comes to practical life, even the educated ones shy away from getting into an interfaith relationship.

However, seeing it from a girl’s perspective, it’s not a matter of their ownership by a particular community. If a person loves someone from another community, it doesn’t mean the ownership is getting betrayed. I’m a Muslim girl who has been in an interfaith relationship twice. The matter of understanding each other goes beyond one’s religion.

In my opinion, people like me are few. If you go on some dating sites including Tinder and OkCupid, you may find a lot of boys with their bio saying: “Looking for a Hindu Girl/Muslim Girl.” And that’s true for girls too. And that’s us, the educated, free thinking youth. What do we expect from our previous generation? It may sound radical but if we still do not accept interfaith relationships, we shouldn’t call ourselves a civilised society.
