How Humanitarianism And Kindness Can Save Us From These Desperate Times

“In our culture, man is made by his character, not his looks.” — Swami Vivekananda

Humanity is a painkiller for all sorts of pains,
A medicine to heal all our sorrows.

In Britain, during World War II, there was a massive shortage of eggs. The British eat eggs in their breakfast. Winston Churchill urged people to stop eating eggs and leave them for soldiers and pregnant women, who need them in their diet. After this, shops were flooded with people. This time, there were there not to buy eggs, but to return them.

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.
Without them, humanity cannot survive.”

– Dalai Lama

The situation is quite similar today. We have a war between life and death. People are fighting for their lives. The battle with the pandemic is getting harder for us each day. It’s getting difficult to get the warfare, i.e. medicines, oxygen cylinders, vaccines, etc. to fight. People are facing many problems — be it financial loss, job loss, shortage of medicines, hospital beds, ventilators and more.

Money, power and reputation are all in vain now. However much you spend on getting these resources, it’s useless. The only thing that will be by your side will be your good deeds. Cooperation, coordination, support, unity, kindness and humanitarianism will help us get through this situation unhurt. We should support everyone around us in whatever way we can.

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one.” — Mother Teresa

We can help the needy ones by fulfilling their needs as much as our capabilities allow. Even if each person gives just one penny to charity, it will add up to millions. Even if we cannot give financial aid, we can at least give moral support to those going through a hard time.

“The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world.” — Dr Paul Farmer

In these times, we should help not just humans but animals as well. They, too, deserve to be equally respected. After all, they are our fellow beings and a part of our beautiful world. We can feed ants, birds, squirrels, monkeys, cats, dogs, cows and many more. We can preserve the homes of wild animals by planting trees, which will also help in fulfilling the shortage of oxygen nowadays. Our little efforts can create a wonderful outcome. We must all come together for the welfare of all living creatures.

“United we stand, divided we fall”: Humanity as described in the words of Swami Vivekananda

The history of the world is that of six men of faith, six men of deep pure character. We need to have three things — the heart to feel, the brain to conceive, the hand to work. First, we must go out of the world and make ourselves fit instruments. Make ourselves a dynamo. Feel first for the world. At a time when all men are ready to work, where is the man of feeling? Test your love and humility. That man who is jealous is not humble or loving. Good works are continually being undone by so much hatred and anger being poured out on the world. If you are pure, if you are strong, you, one man, are equal to the whole world.

Can we come along and work together to bring change?

We can surely bring about a change in our society. Nothing is impossible if we join our hands. We can dodge every obstacle and achieve our goals with each other’s brace. Our hard times will pass easily if we are together. We must cooperate with everyone around us, in whatever way we can. Being with each other in this situation will give us the courage and power to come out of our hurdles and start a new beginning with positivity and gratefulness in our hearts, and with the hope of a bright future.

“All’s well that ends well.”
