Mental Health: It Is Important To Speak Your Mind

An array of thoughts races across our minds. To be precise, 6,200 thoughts per day. Surprising right? Some of these thoughts are negative, some positive. Some people have more negative ones than positive ones and vice-versa. It’s not possible to share every thought that comes into our minds with others but one must share the ones that are affecting us in any way.

Representational Image. Depression manifests in negative thinking.

Pessimistic thinking is one of the leading causes of depression. In fact, depression manifests in negative thinking before it creates a negative effect. The cognitive theory of depression proposes significant relations between negative thoughts and depression that support this statement.  Let me tell you why depression is on the rise resulting in suicide among around 56 million Indians per year. Some of the reasons are that the negativity in them and don’t share it, they do not reach out because they either think that society would not understand their problems i.e: family and friends, or they do not want to burden others with their issues.

There will be people who would not have much time for you due to their busy schedule but inside they care, if they truly care they will make you feel wanted and show love and empathize with you in some way. Some will make you feel worthless, but the catch is not to get trapped in what they say or do. You stand strong because you know you are doing your best every day.

I recently learned that you are the onlooker of your thoughts, they are like passing clouds wherein some will be dark clouds (pessimistic thoughts) and some will be bright-colored clouds ( optimistic thoughts). The catch is that you convert those dark clouds into bright ones. I’m not saying ignore the negativity, learn how to deal with it such as reading happy quotes, attending counseling sessions, or just open up to the person who you feel will make you feel better or one who genuinely cares.

Do not ever hide that thought, let it flow out. I have really realized this from real-life examples, I know of people who now are in their mid 50’s have some sort of neurological problem or severe health issues because they kept what they had in mind to themselves and it piled up for years, resulting in these problems later in life. If you are struggling now, talk it out, it shows you want to feel better or care for your own well-being.

To conclude, you must have heard this very famous quote by Buddha, “Suffering isn’t holding you, you are holding suffering”. Please remember, you are never alone in the battle. Good days always come after bad days and you can overcome anything only if you let the mind speak!
