Quick Byte: Intersectional Feminism Is Important To Achieve Gender Equality

This is an image of a poster that reads feminist and proud

Goal 5 of the UN’s global goals for sustainable development (SDG) is gender equality. This phrase emphasizes women’s equality with men. On the other hand, equal rights refers to a balance of rights, with no gender discrimination at all.

The whole world, apart from some conservative misogynists, repeatedly calls for women’s rights. However, in this effort exhorted under the global feminist campaign, another intersection or group of women are being tortured and persecuted, as they are less in number or power.

Every year, March 8th is celebrated as international women’s day. Representational image.

So, let intersectional feminism widen the circle and make the call for feminism louder.

For instance, a day before the previous international women’s day, the Swiss government tried to welcome the day. However, an intersection of women had to bear the brunt of their discrimination.

The administration decided to hold a general referendum to ban indigenous women from wearing religious burqas or hijabs. Alas! Will women not be able to wear clothes according to their own volition?

Feminism Needs To Be Intersectional

What is the role of the women’s movement? Women’s rights are being repeatedly called for, on women’s day, but those rights are being undermined again and again by blaming a particular religion for political gains.

It’s like inviting someone home and then pushing them out when they turn up. If Taslima Nasrin is a women, so is Khatija Rahman, the daughter of AR Rahman. Both their voices are feminist voices, but they disagree with each other.

Nasrin calls for just feminism, while Rahman calls for intersectional feminism.

A Man’s World

A series called Man’s World (2015), created by Y-Films, became really popular among activists for gender equality. The series showed a paradoxical picture, where a man takes the place of a woman. She screams in pain and goes through unbearable agony.

We should not just call for equality in the workplace, but at the same time respect women’s security, religious freedom, personal life and thoughts. Only then will women’s rights be equal.

On March 7, everyone’s digital platforms are filled only with the wishes of international women’s day. Some share statuses praising their mothers, their loved ones or other such women.

The goal is to have a special day associated with a particular subject. Similarly, women’s day has a specific purpose. The most commonly observed purpose is gender equality.

Digital Abuse Is Real

Unfortunately, sexual harassment and abuse in digital platforms are being reported increasingly. Indeed, it’s the act of hurting womanhood.

To know their worth, it’s enough to look into some natural phenomena.

We take advantage of hens, for their eggs, but not the cock. Apart from this, the balance placed in the nature should not be violated for any kind of sustainable development that the whole world is yearning for.
