“We Are Broad-Minded” And Other Lies Society Tells Us

“Society would rather appear to be spotlessly clothed with their reputations intact in their illusionary virginity of body, mind and soul.”

What are the pillars of society: rules, regulations and insatiable expectations? Also, let us not forget its generosity (which is a hoax) and conventionality behind its “We are very broad-minded” farce.

Even if we all are the proud members of the said society, we all at one point in our lives will experience its harsh judgments. Being a woman, I utterly detest the limitations that society imposes on us.

“You cannot do this, because you’re a girl” is a statement that every girl has encountered from time immemorial. Our upbringing is centred on the ultimate social achievement called marriage since society would rather accept a married woman than an independent and educated one. And God forbid a girl goes through a divorce, it is regarded as a social sin, notwithstanding her suffering and pain.

When you question societal norms and mayhap go against them, you are rebuked back. Even one’s choices in clothing are judged and criticised. If a girl is a survivor of rape, it is her fault and not of those who forced themselves on her, because she may or may not have dressed indecently. How is it that society is always ready to blame someone without even being aware of the entire reality?

Freedom is completely imaginative since “the world is not safe.” But how is it my fault that society has failed to build a safe environment for me?

Above that, there is the unjustified prejudice and discrimination that has made living in society difficult. One’s choices in friendship and companionship are judged based on social hierarchy, and not character; one’s caste and religion are given greater importance than one’s personality; racial discrimination is promoted and people belonging to minority communities, their rights and freedoms are negated by society; people who belong to the LGBTQ+ community are frowned upon and subjected to obnoxious criticisms. They, too, are denied rights and freedom, even opportunities.

Society accepts and recognises those with money and power, while others are mistreated. People are judged for their wrong choices in life, while their right ones are pushed under the rug. If a person requires psychological and therapeutic help, they are termed mad. Privacy is definitely not respected by society.

Broadminded as it calls itself, society is sure as hell not. Awareness about these wrongful conventional ideologies is very much required. Even though they have been practised over time, yet, there is a need to understand that times have changed. Society needs to cut out its minuscule ideologies, copy the present generation’s liberal thoughts and opinions, paste it loud, and clear in their minds.

Many have suffered and continue to suffer under the anarchy of society, but we can only live healthily and happily if society will no longer make it hard for us to breathe. One must keep up with time or else they’ll be left behind, I hope that one day this would be the motto of society.
