How This Mumbai-Based NGO Is Becoming A Lifeline For Children In Poverty

Living in a vulnerable situation has exposed the underprivileged children of India to the harsher realities of life. With very little or no protection in terms of basic shelter, food, medical care etc., many of them lose their right to mental, physical and collective development and become highly prone to depression, low self-esteem, insomnia and malnutrition. Poverty is certainly one of the major causes of this dilemma, further compounded by illiteracy.

Children born in poverty are more prone to malnutrition, diseases, substandard living conditions, poor hygiene and numerous other ailments. Once a child is caught in the poverty trap, they get caught in the same vicious cycle and continue to live there. Therefore, it is imperative to break the chain of poverty that engulfs the lives of the helpless.

The increase in population, low agricultural productivity, economic slowdown, inflation, unemployment, and various social and political factors contribute to this inevitable state of poverty. The agenda of the government, along with the people of India, must be eradication of poverty not only through monetary contribution but by taking personal responsibility.

Innumerable non-governmental organisations are working towards the eradication of poverty, but success comes only in small numbers; and the reason is the lack of public participation. The greater the number of supporting hands, the easier the task of alleviating the burden of poverty that oppresses underprivileged children. One such NGO in Mumbai working towards the cause of underprivileged children is Save the Children.

Every one of us needs to champion the cause and take a realistic approach towards it. We need to start helping underprivileged children as a collective social responsibility. In addition to individuals, large corporations can also fund and support individuals or charities that work for the welfare of children affected by poverty. Children are the beginning of this poverty cycle, and their lives must be reformed to break out of its malignancy.

We rely on the support of Save the Children to combat this urgent problem. The NGO has been at the forefront since its inception in India in 2008; they are responsible for the reformation of over 10 million children. In 2019, they helped around 12 lakh children.

Be it nutrition, healthcare, protection, education or help in emergencies, Save the Children has played a crucial role in the lives of the underprivileged. Registered in India as ‘Bal Raksha Bharat’, it is one of the best independent child rights NGOs in the country. Apart from running 65 programmes across 19 Indian states, Save the Children also boasts its 1,73,000 individual supporters, 36 corporates and 20 institutional (national and international) partners who help it reach out to the most vulnerable children of the nation.
